Butler Gulch is an easy drive from Front Range towns, and offers beautiful views of Red Mountain (12,315), Stanley Mountain (12,521) Vasquez Peak (12,947) among others. The trailhead is at 10,440 feet. We ascend the first 1 1/2 miles through a gladed forest with good snow off trail. The majority of the elevation gain is in that first 1 1/2 miles. Above timberline (11,400 feet) we head to the mine or a turn around spot. Our goal is not necessary the mine, but to travel a route less traveled and to enjoy the powder.
Those that choose to carpool / caravan meet at the Wooly Mammoth Park and Ride, Section BB at 7:30 for a prompt 7:40 departure. CMC strongly discourages carpooling. Carpooling is at the discretion of the driver. If carpooling, masks and cracked windows are advised. Please plan on driving yourself. If you choose to meet at the trailhead please notify the leader and arrive there by 8:30 AM.
We will travel up I-70 to Exit 232 US Hwy 40 towards Empire/Granby. Continue past Empire; 0.3 miles beyond Berthoud Falls turn left onto the Henderson mine/Jones Pass Rd. At 1.8 miles turn right onto Jones Pass Road. Drive another 0.4 miles to trailhead.

For those that carpool the cost is 75 miles X .30 = $22 split by everyone in the car including the driver.
Bring your 10 essentials, plenty of readily accessible snacks for quick energy. Plan on wind and cold (facemask), and have the appropriate dress. A warm drink at lunch is always nice.
