Backpacking Section

Interested in Backpacking? Join the Backpacking Section (BPX)!

  1. More Trips—BPX will create many more “general” backpacking trips than offered to  members in recent years
  2. Greater Variety—BPX will offer a greater variety of trips, including easy and more difficult, overnights and multi-day, weekend and weekday, out-and-backs and loop trips, and with down time for fishing or exploring the area
  3. Earlier Scheduling—BPX will post a list of summer trips in early spring, to give participants more time to plan their summer
  4. Advanced Notice—BPX members will be kept informed on what’s being planned and given email notice as soon as trips are available for registration
  5. Education—BPX will offer backpacking articles and field training beyond Backpacking School
  6. Coaching—BPX will help members with prior backpacking experience get started backpacking again
  7. Overnight Gear Checks—BPX will offer overnight gear checks at local campgrounds to try out new gear before using it on an extended backpacking trip
  8. Newsletters—BPX members will periodically receive published news
  9. Notices – Members will periodically receive notice of coming events, including spots still open on posted trips

How do I Join this Section?

$20/yr with membership.  Select Backpacking section when you sign up for your new CMC membership. 

If you are already a member, you can join Backpacking by contacting Mary Bradley, Denver Group Liaison.  Her email is marybradley@cmc.org  She will help you join the section and assist with paying the yearly fee.  You can also write or call CMC Membership Services at office@cmc.org or call (303) 279-3080 

With your membership, you will receive the BPX Newsletter, "Backcountry Cache" so please ensure BPX has your correct, current email address.  .

Backpacking Classifications

Backpacking Trip Classifications are assigned a rating for the entire trip based on the most difficult day of the trip

Easy Backpack: <5 miles/1000' (Easy Hike is <8 miles/1200')

Moderate Backpack: 5-10 miles/1000'-2000' (Moderate Hike is 8-12 miles/1200'-2500')

Difficult Backpack: >10 miles/2000' (Difficult Hike is >12 miles/2500'+)
