Thank you for your interest in supporting CMC’s youth programs! Basecamp Assistants are crucial to helping us deliver a higher quality and quantity of engagement opportunities for young Coloradans to experience the outdoor activities you enjoy. Whether your passion is hiking, rock climbing, geology, or something else connected to outdoor education and recreation, we would be happy to have you share it as a YEP volunteer.

This position is an excellent way to test out what it is like to volunteer with us. There is no minimum time commitment. Simply fill out an application so we can learn more about you. We then schedule a short phone interview with you to make sure we have opportunities that match your interests. After that, we schedule your first volunteer shift and go from there!

Here is a bit more about the role and what we are looking for:

Position Responsibilities

  • Support YEP staff with scheduled activities including belaying climbers, hiking with a group, and leading small group science/ nature-based activities
  • Actively engage students in experiential learning opportunities
  • Prepare activities, materials, and equipment for programs as needed.  Clean up program areas.
  • Participate in pre-trip and post-trip meetings and debriefs with staff
  • Facilitate a positive, fun learning environment and group culture

Qualifications

  • Must be 16 years or older
  • Comfortable working with school-age children and adults of all backgrounds
  • Positive attitude and sense of humor
  • If you sign up, show up! Volunteers increase our staff’s ability to effectively engage student groups.
  • If you cannot attend your shift for any reason, communicate in a timely manner with staff
  • Ability to provide personal transportation to and from the American Mountaineering Center in Golden

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Experience working with youth and families
  • Spanish speaking skills are highly desired, but not necessary
  • One or more of the following:
    • Experience in natural science or related field
    • Experience working in outdoor programs
    • Experience teaching youth from diverse backgrounds in environmental and/or adventure education

Time Commitment & Benefits

  • No minimum commitment- help us when you can! Volunteer shifts are typically 4-6 hours in length during school days. Afternoon, evening, and weekend shifts also occur but are less common.
  • CMC branded gear giveaways for volunteers who contribute more than 10 hours per year
  • Free admission for CMC’s annual Volunteer Leadership Conference
  • This is an unpaid volunteer position
