First Aid

The Wilderness First Aid 8-hour course is targeted for any recreationalist who wants to feel more confident and prepared in encountering and treating injuries and illnesses that can happen in a backcountry environment. The curriculum forces students to think creatively, adapt to ever changing situations, and learn valuable leadership, decision making and commutation skills.

This course is tailored for teens who are active in the outdoors, excited to learn how to recreate safely, and want to learn what to do when things go wrong.  Curriculum does not go into the depth that our 16-hour WFA course for adults does, however it does cover the fundamentals to stress the importance of safety, preparation, and crisis avoidance.

Course Objectives:

  • Prevention of potential problems, rescuer, patient and bystander safety.
  • Performing a basic physical exam, identifying abnormalities and life-threatening problems, obtaining vital signs, patient history
  • Emergency evacuation plans
  • Treatment and stabilization of musculoskeletal injuries, improvising splints
  • First aid kit planning for specific activities and needs
  • Additional topics may include: blister prevention and treatment, bleeding and wound control, management of heat and cold illnesses, altitude related illnesses, hydration problems, spinal cord protection, shock, chest pain, abdominal pain, basic patient lifts and transfers, anaphylaxis, or mental and psychological first aid
